Abolish the Granville County gas chamber!

Animal advocates in Granville County are hoping county officials will consider a recent grant offer by HSUS NC director Kim Alboum to get rid of the animal shelter’s gas chamber. Members of the North Carolina Responsible Animal Owners’ Alliance, a group that supports the use of the gas chamber to kill shelter pets, are arguing for Granville County to refuse the grant and keep its gas chamber in operation.

It’s important that county leaders understand that the barbaric gas chamber is a throwback to our less-civilized past and has no place in a modern, humane animal shelter. Animal advocates need to contact the Granville County manager and commissioners (see contact info below) and urge them to end the use of and remove the gas chamber from the county animal shelter.  A sample letter can be used as a template for your own letters to these officials. More points to use in a letter can be found in the American Humane Association gas chamber fact sheet

How about Vance count? Anything being done there? They also have cats outside in wire cages with no floor, so small they use a paper food dish for a litter box, across from barking dogs.

    • Vance County is currently considering accepting the HSUS grant as well, and reportedly they are using mostly LI right now–see this piece I did on all the NC gas chambers for more info and contacts for Vance and other counties.

But a huge problem in Vance is that they need to completely replace their shelter with a facility designed to house pets humanely and provide an attractive and comfortable adoption environment. Folks in Vance definitely need to write their commissioners about that.

North Carolina Responsible Animal Owners’ Alliance also worked to defeat the ‘Anti-Puppy Mill’ bill several years ago, and have fought anti-tethering legislation in local communities across the state. Of course they’ll want to continue with the use of gas chambers, but the question is how on earth they are appointed to animal advisory committees. Granville already has a pretty nasty history to live down from the 70s; it seems they wouldn’t want to be the last county to come into the 21st century on this issue.

Continue to inform everyone of these barbaric issues so that enough voices can protest loud enough for the animal killers to finally listen. Sure they hear, but do they listen? Will they heed? That’s why more of the good guys need to be informed. More = louder.

Randolph County turned down a $3000 grant from HSUS a year ago to dismantle theirs because in the words of County Health Director MiMI Cooper-”I`m not getting rid of that gas chamber”…..prime example why NC is so far behind in animal rights issues.

    • Hmm, I was told Randolph County took the grant and then still refused to get rid of the gas chamber. Basically, they lied.

I know for a fact that they did not accept the grant money and it was withdrawn. I have a scan of the origonal grant award when offered, and it no longer appears on HSUS awards page….

  5. Anyone know what counties in NC still use gas chambers???

      • It does seem like N.C. is one of the worst states for torture of animals. What is their problem? Lack of intelligence in humane proceedures or are they just sadist? Seems like a bunch of sadist in “control”.

      • Yes, things are bad here. Sometimes it just feels so backwards. The good news is that there are more and more animal advocates working to shed light in the darkness and change things.

…if you only knew the truth,,,,
A good place to start would be to read “Little Boy Blue”-a book about a rescue puppy that was transported from NC and adopted up north….lots of complex psychological stuff going on in the rescue and county shelter world in NC…
It seems shelter directors want you to think they are heroes, but in reality are usually the polar opposite…
